Music room, completedWhat’s better than capturing a space in your home for your passions, hobbies, or just relaxing in?  Some people devote a whole room to their interests. Others will carve a space out of a basement, attic, porch, or closet, to lose themselves in their creative compulsions. Whatever niche you need for nirvana, find a space and make it your own. I like to call these places, “specialty spaces”, they can include areas for music, sewing, crafts, art studio, exercise, home theater, work shop, gardening,  game room and many others, depending on what your gig is. Some spaces have to multi-task as this one does.

My client wanted a room for he and his family to make some music in. They are all very talented musically, so this room had to be designed for some serious rockin’-out. He wanted the design to display his guitars artistically, but still be able to access Music room, before them easily. Also to include areas for electric drums, keyboard, a record album and CD collection, as well as a guest room and computer area. All in an 11′ x 13′ space. So, with all of these “must haves”, a room to rock -in was born.

Spaceplan of music room In the space plan, we were able to address all of his wants and needs and still achieve the desired asthetic he was hoping for. The room was designed similar to plan and he was happy with the results.   (click on pictures to enlarge)

A few elements we incorporated were…

Albums and CD\'s on wallThe hanging guitar frames were painted red, right on the wall, then framed with half -round moulding painted black. Guitars are displayed on guitar hooks and easily removed to play. The painted frames elevate the guitars to an “art” statement in the room.

The sofa is a queen size sleeper with a neutral sueded microfiber upholstery, for the overnight guests (or those who stay too long).

The red leather ottomans have storage and are on wheels to move easily out of the way when things get wild.

The red linen drapery, in full length size, not only add decorative appeal, but it and other fabrics (carpet, sofa upholstery), help with acoustics and sound absorption.

Guitars on wallThe album collection is displayed over the desk that is used for computer and piano keyboard. The CD collection is displayed on the side walls in frames made especially for these collections.

So, the music room functions well and “looks cool” for many a jumpin’ jam session. I hear they are enjoying the room and some great music has been bouncing off those walls.

I know many of you have “specialty rooms” that you like to escape to. What spaces have you created to “chill and thrill” in? Share your passion places, and where you fit them into your home.

Rock on!!

2. Thanks so much Joan,

It was a fun room to design. The clients found many things for the room that were incorporated, so it was great to work closely with them. It’s fun to do something a little different from time to time.

You ROCK too!

3. Cool! You did a great job with that room.
Great frame idea because it doesn’t make the room smaller.
You are good!!!!

4. Thank you Julie,

Yes, I think the red guitar frames are good backgrounds and draws attention to the guitars, more than just hanging them on the wall. Also adds some color and contemporary shape as well. The red areas did take many coats of paint though. I should have primed the retangles with a gray primer first for fewer coats of red paint. Gray primer first, really works if you want to paint a wall red.

Thanks for commenting. Great to hear form you.

9. You’re so welcome Jill,

I’m glad you were able to show your husband some “possibilities” for a music room. The guitars are like pieces of music sculpture, so framing them elevated them to art. Glad you liked them.

Thanks for dropping in.
