Living in southern California, our seasons are less pronounced than in some other areas around the country. But, even though our weather is mild most of the year, our spring explodes with color. By the end of February early bloomers and budders are tempting the taste buds with exuberant eye candy, as nature continues it’s jaw-dropping drama for many months. It’s my favorite time of year (can you tell). I wanted to share a little… early spring with you and give you some hope, that spring is on it’s way to a neighborhood near you.
I love to garden. My sister will be visiting me from Missouri, so that motivated me to get a few planters and pots planted with some new annuals. I like to add all new potting mix to the pots and throw the old dirt in a compost pile to be mixed and used again. I then water well and add a flower fertlizer to give a boost to the new transplants. I have more pots to do, but I don’t like to rush, It’s great therapy, digging in the dirt and knowing something you’ve actually planted will grow and thrive into something beautiful or edible ( if you don’t kill them with kindness first).
I’ve been wanting to do some container gardening and grow some fruit and vegetables from seed (a true test of the green thumb, I think). My outdoor space is limited so I’ll have to do some research on the subject. I did read that, a $50. investment in seeds and fertilizer will produce well over $1000. worth of fruit and vegetables. I thought this was timely with the economy being in the compost pit. People could really save money growing their own food and any excess could be canned or given to food banks. I’m sure many of you do this already, or will. I predict vegetable gardens will really take root this year.
I know there are many great gardeners out there. Will you be planting a garden this year? We would love to hear any great tips or techniques you might have to help us garner goodness from the garden. I know it’s early, but we can plan and dream.
Spring will be here soon, hang in there and happy gardening!

1. Your sister is so lucky to be visiting there.
Love the daisies and all your decorations inside and out.
Where do you get all your energy?
We are still in snow but those pictures sure look wonderful…spring can’t come too soon.

2. Hi Julie,
Thank you. Yes, I’m excited to see her. We always have a good time. The daisies I planted in the window boxes are used quite a bit along the freeways out here. They are very hardy, flower all year, and not picky about water (good for planters that can dry out easily). They are African Daisies and come in a big variety of color. I liked the white daisies with black centers because I have black accents in my entry. I’ve not used them before so I hope they do well in the planters.
Sorry about the snow. It will be gone soon and you can get out and have some fun in the garden.
Great to hear from you,
LYC
