I am fascinated by different personality types. I find it so interesting that no matter how many people are in a family, even if they are from the same gene pool and share the same environment - each personality is unique to its owner. We saw it in our own three children, one wanted to rule the world, one wanted life to be a constant party, and the other just wanted peace and calm. Whew!
As I walked around my home this week thinking about personality differences, I noticed that I had set up little places of refuge that fit our different personality types. Let me explain using the photo collage:
1. The top left corner represents the Sanguine Personality – that would be me, social and chatty! I like fun! I am not fond of sitting still, and I like to be surrounded with things I think are cute and that entertain me . . . hence the out of season angel on the window sill and the wagon full of dog toys on the floor.
2. The top right picture represents the Choleric Personality – the strong -willed leader. The person who makes decisions readily, likes change, and has no problem being in charge. So, for the Choleric person we have the large leather sofa with a comfortable pillow, but most importantly the mandatory remote controls and telephone are close at hand.
3. Moving clockwise, the lower right corner represents the Melancholy Personality – the organized, list-making thinker. This formal straight backed chair provides the perfect setting for writing lists, planning a future, or organizing a household. The warm sunshine and view of the neighborhood are close at hand for inspiration.
4. Finally, the lower left represents the Phlegmatic Personality – the calm, peaceful, let’s relax and NOT get excited individual. The large over-stuffed rocker recliner offers the perfect place for a morning, afternoon, or evening nap. Of course the scented candle provides any additional serenity that might be deemed necessary . . . okay, probably not necessary!
If you would like to learn more about the different personality types, Wikipedia offers a pretty good description here, and you can find an on line personality test here. I have been privileged to hear the author of Personality Plus, teach with wit and humor the characteristics of personalities. Great fun!!
So, look around, what did you discover at your house? Have you set up little retreats that fit your family member’s personalities? Is your Sanguine child’s room filled with bright colors and stuff? Is your Melancholy child’s room organized and orderly? How about your Choleric or Phlegmatic offspriing? Ponder your own personality and let us know how you express those inherent characteristics in big or small ways around your home.
