On a recent vacation in the Caribbean, I was delighted by the subtle use of the pineapple motif in our room’s decor. The pineapple has long been considered a symbol of welcome and hospitality.

Pineapple-shaped lamps flanked either side of the bed echoing the pineapple shape carved into each post on the four poster bed. Beautifully embroidered yellow pineapples graced the bedding.

Not as obvious was the repeat of the pineapple in the print on the drapery fabric and displayed on the wooden trash garbage can. The motif was repeated again in the ensuite bathroom in the top frame of the mirror.

So, if you are looking for a decorative motif that whispers “island hospitality”, consider the pineapple. Can’t you just imagine it used to create a welcoming feel on a front porch, in a guest bedroom or even a dining room?

What other decorative motifs do you like?

1. I agree with Joan on the Pineapple Motif designs, I myself just LOVE the Pineapple welcoming feel and I have a Pineapple at my entrance table along with a pineapple design on my entry rug. We had just built a new home and I am really enjoying decorating and all the tips on designing!

Thank you for showing the Lovely Pinapple bedroom!!!

2. Love it, love it, love it! I almost had my cornices reupholstered in a pineapple fabric until my son said it looked too island for Chicago. Wish I had, however, since pineapples are becoming very popular again. Thank goodness I didn’t give away a small pineapple lamp.

Thanks for your photos and posting.

3. Hi Deborah:
Pineapples in the entryway are a great idea — gives that welcome hospitality feel to your guests as soon as they walk in the door. Thanks for sharing your use of the pineapple motif. It will inspire others I’m sure,

4. Hi Rachel:
I love Chicago and I’m so delighted to hear you still have your pineapple lamp — maybe you can find a few throw pillows with a pineapple print to match your cornices and bring them into the room that way. Thanks for stopping by and commenting,
joan

5. Hi Joan,

We just returned from a vacation at “Sandals Grande Antigua” and stayed in a suite just like the one you pictured! I, too was inspired by the beautiful room accents and coveted the hand-embroidered yellow pineapple linens. They should sell them in their gift shop.

6. Dona: That was the location of this room — lovely resort, isn’t it? We had a great week as well. Good idea for them to sell the embroidered pineapple linens in their giftshop — even just the pillow covers would be nice. Well, it’s cold here in Boston today so time to pull out the pictures of the pool and the pineapples and pretend we are back in Antigua!

7. Joan – I love your blog and all your creative ideas. I just wanted to share that I have a pineapple doorbell. I saw it at a country store (I think it was made by Baldwin). Since I heard that the pineapple was a symbol of hospitality, I just had to have it. At Halloween, the children get a chuckle out of it. Thanks for sharing all your great ideas; they are all very inspiring.
