Where do you get your decorating inspiration from? Do you browse furniture stores? Head to a model home center and walk through the homes? Buy decorating books or magazines? I have done all of the above. Now I also add to my list of places to be inspired are decorating blogs! Currently I am working on my master bedroom. This first picture is my inspiration photo. It is a page I ripped out of Country Homes Magazine a couple of years ago.

Ripping pages out of magazines is my very favorite way of getting decorating ideas. When I see something I like, I tear the page out and file it away. Then when I am ready to redecorate a room, I pull out the file and start planning. I have never been able to redecorate a room from start to finish all at once. Time and money won’t allow me that luxury. This second picture is my bedroom as it looks today.

So I redecorate in steps. I get the room base first. The bigger pieces of furniture in place. They might not be the right color, but painting them can come later. Then I slowly start the room transformation. I might paint the walls. Buy some accessories…Little by little the layers are built up.

I want to buy a great ornate mirror to put above my bed. It won’t be exactly like the picture, but it will give me the look I want. I want to replace the trunk at the end of my bed with an upholstered bench. I enjoy the process. I feel so much more satisfied, than if I just went to a store and bought it all at once.

Where do you get your decorating inspiration? Are you working on any projects right now? I would love to see pictures of them. You can add pictures to your comments below.

4. I too, get many of my inspirations form the sources that you mention. My fav is also magazines. I love the challenge of finding the right pieces and fabrics to emulate the desired look. Often, I think this is the best part.

We are currently building a new home and I am loving trying to create new rooms with our existing furniture used in different ways. I have found an inspiration page and have bought most of the fabrics to create the look. This has kept me quite busy at the sewing machine.

I am happy to share this look with you but also wish I could show another pic of the fabrics that I am using.

Perhaps another blog at a later date would work.

This is the inspiration photo.

5. Penny, I absolutely love your bedroom! Did you get that pretty quilt from Penney’s (if you don’t mind me asking). I have seen one similar on their site — so pretty. I have an iron bed in my master bedroom and the dresser is French in style, in a pale yellow distressed finish — not Provencial but chunkier in style, like a credenza. Do you think that I could use red, like toile, for draperies, bedding, etc? What is the best color to use with the yellow dresser. I’m debating between black and white toile, red and white, or blue and white. Thanks for your suggestions.
