Drawers are a wonderful way to store many small items.  However, drawers can easily become catch-alls for all sorts of random bits and pieces. Do you have any drawers that are so stuffed to the brim so that they are difficult to open and shut, never mind try to find anything you need? If you answered, “yes” then you need some drawer organizers!

Unfortunately drawer organizers don’t actually do the decluttering for you, but they will help to keep the contents of your drawers organized so that you can see what you have at a quick glance.  Most of us use a utensil drawer organizer to separate knives, forks and spoons and you can apply this simple concept to items stored in other drawers as well.

I love to get fancy and match drawer organizers to a room’s decor (imagine this lovely leopard drawer organizer I found at HG in a safari inspired room) but you can use any small containers you already have lying around the house.

The key is to create individual segments that allow separate storage for each unique category within a single drawer.

If you want to make your own drawer organizers, small boxes work well — place them loosely in your drawers or glue or tape them together to hold them in place. For a more decorative look, cover your boxes with left-over wallpaper, wrapping paper or fabric. Old plastic containers, utensil drawer organizers, or muffin tins are possibilities too. A brightly colored plastic ice cube tray can serve as a great drawer organizer for small items like earrings or craft supplies.

When choosing a drawer organizer, first measure your drawer’s width, depth and height and also be sure your individual sections are the right size for each category the drawer will contain.

Desk drawers, kitchen junk drawers, dresser drawers, or bathroom vanity drawers will all benefit from carefully selected drawer organizers. For clothing, spring-loaded drawer dividers can help to keep your t-shirts, socks and lingerie in line.

So, why not take the Spring Organizing challenge and start with one of your drawers today?

1. Empty the drawer completely and toss all the trash. Remove anything that belongs “elsewhere”.

2.Take the remaining items and place like with like.

3. Choose a drawer organizer that will house each of the categories you have for that drawer. Buy or make a fun, funky, elegant or just plain functional drawer organizer to fit your drawer.

4. Place all your items into their new homes.

Aaah, doesn’t that feel good? Of course you’ll probably open that drawer a dozen times just to take in the beauty of your newly organized space. You may even force your family members to admire it with you. Take pictures too. A newly organized drawer is one of life’s little pleasures.

So, what drawer will you organize first?

1. Joan,
You’re right about the organizers not doing the work for you. But mine almost does!

Have you seen the custom adjustable organizers at orderlydrawer.com? Cool stuff there. Yes, a bit pricey, but I’ve found it to be worth the money spent on my busiest drawers.

And they are made in the USA to boot!
