“Patience — Faith — Openness, is what the sea has to teach. Simplicity — Solitude–Intermittency…” Anne Morrow Lindberg, “Gift from the Sea”
One of my all-time favorite summertime books to read (and re-read) is “Gift from the Sea”. Reflecting on different kinds of shells she finds on the beach, Anne Morrow Lindbergh uses them as metaphors to explore themes of solitude, simplicity, love, family and the empty nest. Some fifty years after it was written, it still speaks to me (and women of all ages everywhere) with amazing relevance.
Other gifts from the sea are appearing in my home these days as well. This morning I swapped out my squirrel bookends for some that are sea-inspired.

You can make your own (as I did ) with a couple of glass containers filled with your favorite collections from the beach. I’ve got some mini-shells and pebbles in this pair of jars.
After viewing Cathy’s fabulous “coastal tablescape“ I also filled a tall glass rectangular vase with polished stones as the first step in creating a little East Coast scape of my own. I’ll be sure to let you know when I’m done.
What about you? What treasures from the sea are you showcasing in your home this summer? How are you striving for more simplicity? What’s your favorite classic for summertime reading?
1. That is one of my favorite books! I’ve read many of her other books as well about her adventures flying w/hubby. Amazing! And yes, great inspiration as well!

3. Hi Linda: Your collections sound lovely — I’m especially intrigued by the sea glass. Be sure to send a photo when you find that perfect container to show off your collection.

4. HI Susan: Yes, she has a fascinating life story, doesn’t she? But like you, Gift from the Sea is my favorite.

5. Gift From the Sea is a book that every woman should read. In fact, it wouldn’t hurt for a few men to read it. I have given copies to my daughter and my daughter in law. When I read it, I couldn’t put it down. I think every woman can relate to it. I read it many years ago and I think its time for me to pick it up again. I read it one summer as I was riding to the beach for summer vacation. What a treat!
