knitfitti 003

Has knitfitti hit your neighborhood yet?  Here’s the latest to appear in my local park.  (you can click on the photo to get a better look)

What do you think?  Love it or hate it?

Would you knit decor for your outdoor space?

1. Sorry, but to me it’s just plain awful and reminds me of those plastic flowers
posted near the site of a fatal automobile accident. Maybe that energy could go into sowing some real wildflower seeds?

2. I live right in South End Boston where this picture was taken! I love it! I think it is a great way to bring color to the public walking park. I don’t know if I would do that for my outdoor space, but it does make me smile everytime I walk by.

Also, as a crafter I love making things like this but have no idea what to do with them when i’m done, Great idea!!

5. The flowers are cute but not used like that. I can’t imagine what would happen when they got wet and dirty!

6. Is this outside a retirement home? This is tacky and makes me think of old people.

10. Aesthetically, the knitting decor is quirky and offbeat; I can see it appealing to some and not to others. But on a different level, I find knitfitti — a concept I’ve only come across recently — to be very endearing. When I knit for someone else, I am giving them not only the finished product itself, but considerable hours of my time. I also stitch many thoughts of the recipient into the project on which I’m working. So I guess I see knitfitti as a random act of knitting kindness, expressing a sense of joy, optimism, and generosity toward the community into which it is anonymously placed. And oh yes, I think it conveys a wonderful glimmer of humour as well. It warms my heart to hear of casual passers-by smiling when they see it.

Perhaps you have to be a knitter to understand, but I find my play-by-the-rules self thinking about how my own small town would look festooned in splashes of brightly coloured wool. Certainly much cheerier than it would besmirched with a spray paint can.

For those who find it tacky, it is fortunately non-permanent and easily removed. And ultimately, if knit in natural fibres, biodegradable.

13. Unattractive. Plant something natural that takes little care to maintain for all to enjoy. “Mer”

16. I am opening a candy store and wondering if anyone out there could knit colorful candies or if anyone has seen blown glass candy or what ever candy look items

by Skye — 6/8/09 at 7:39 pm #

17. Well, so far it seems like there’s a lot more thumbs down than thumbs up for knitfitti. Thanks Denise for giving us a knitters viewpoint. For those of you who were wondering, so far the yarn has held up quite well in the rain which is amazing to me. Oh, and if anyone out there can help Skye with her need for knitted or handblown glass candies leave a comment with a link here for her. All the best with your candy store opening, Skye. And a special thanks to all for taking the time to share your thoughts — we love to hear from you!

18. I’m not real fond of it.

19. I have to admit - it did make me smile and I thought it was a bit cleaver, particularly with the real flowers in the background. At least you don’t have to water these and it made the steel piping a little less harsh. :)

20. Sorry, it looks like something you would find in a tacky trailer park :(
