On one of my recent jaunts to the garden center I spotted a delightful collection of birdhouses nestled above this front door and just had to stop and ask permission to take a picture to share with you all. I loved all the bright colors, so eye catching from the road. Got me thinking about all the different ways you could decorate your home/yard with birdhouses.
Of course I’m a little partial to birdhouses myself, perhaps because my folks have a backyard full of them.
However, the birdhouses in my parents’ yard are well-used by the local birds so they serve more than just a decorative role. Mom designs the birdhouses and Dad builds them. (And seeing as it’s Father’s Day on Sunday I’ll sneak in a picture of Dad and I here and pause to say that in addition to being the best birdhouse builder I know, he is one AMAZING dad — I’m so blessed to have him for a father!)

Of course if your dad doesn’t build birdhouses you can pick up some really cute ones at Home Goods right now — I was there on the weekend and there were plenty to choose from.
Someone on the web shared a photo of their birdhouses mounted on a fence — isn’t that clever? (you can click on the photo to see the whole fence full)

So, are you a birdhouse collector or a birdwatcher, or a little bit of both? How do you use birdhouses to decorate your outdoor space?

2. What do you do about squirrels on the birdhouses that hang off your fence??

3. There’s not much you can do to keep the squirrels away that I know of unless you use squirrel proof feeders (not all that charming in design). You just have to let the squirrels and the birds sort it out!
