Summer brings warm weather, longer days, and houseguests. And when it comes to hosting, I have an open-door philosophy. In the past month alone, I’ve had five visitors. And I love it. Friends actually refer to me as the houseguest junkie.
Since I don’t have a traditional guest room—my apartment only consisting of one bedroom—I do little things to cozy up the living area. (Guests typically sleep on my super comfortable sofa or on an Aero bed. Unless, of course, houseguests include a couple or Mom, in which case I give up my room to give them more privacy.)
I tend to keep the guest quarters simple. I offer a variety of pillows—for the side, back, or stomach sleeper—a heavier and lightweight blanket, and high thread-count sheets (I found 610-thread-count sheets for less than $60). I make room in one of my front closets (I have two of them!) for their clothes to hang. I place stacks of magazines by their bed (or sofa) and fresh linens and a washcloth in the bathroom. Two other musts: fresh flowers and a bottle of wine. Nothing fancy in either case. Just something that lets them know I’ve been anxiously awaiting their arrival.
