I don’t fancy myself a green thumb by any means. In fact, I usually kill plants entrusted to my care—unintentionally, of course. But I want to change. I want to have pretty pots of colorful flowers and gorgeous garden objects on my apartment terrace. But what sort of garden design is right for me? Which is right for you? Take my quiz below to unearth your homegrown style.

What’s your go-to outfit for a Saturday outing?

  1. Jeans, a T, and a classic blazer
  2. Layers. Lots of them. A skirt, layered tops, a denim jacket, and loads of accessories
  3. Skinny pants, a light cashmere sweater, and flats

Which Desperate Housewife do you relate to most?

    1. Bree
    2. Susan
    3. Gabby

What flowers are you most likely to pick up at the supermarket?

  1. Roses
  2. Mixed bouquet
  3. Peonies

Your friends would describe you as…

    1. Totally put together
    2. A little all over the place
    3. Sleek and stylish

Your dream home is…

  1. An old Victorian
  2. A converted barn
  3. An open loft

If you answered mostly a’s, you’re a traditionalist at heart and in the garden. Try planting boxwoods, ivy, and wisteria among roses, foxgloves, and delphiniums. If you have the space, add an arbor, trellis, birdbath, or other statuary.

If you answered mostly b’s, you’re an eclectic in every sense of the word. You like to mix it up. Climate permitting, you should experiment with a variety of succulents and ferns, bamboo, palms, sunflowers, and orchids. Adorn your garden with natural elements, such as seashells, driftwood, and fountains.

If you answered mostly c’s, you’re a modernist. Simplicity is key. Stick with succulents, trees, and large-leaf tropical plants. Play with organic shapes when it comes to objects in the garden, mid-century modern furnishings, and concrete-block paths.
