In order to keep our homes running smoothly it can’t all be about buying and displaying decorative objects. We need some basic functional pieces as well to help us keep our other stuff in order. At least that’s what I keep telling my clients who are struggling with clutter and chaos.
But you can still have fun with your functional storage pieces by matching them to your room’s decor. Do you have a plain metal file cabinet? Why not paint it to match your room?

Over at this Woman’s Day website they’ll walk you through a simple DIY project to take plain plastic bins and some fabric and create these fun storage bins that match the other fabrics in your room.

Of course you can also find great functional, yet fun storage pieces at Home Goods too. I bought these black faux leather storage boxes there and although they may not say fun to you, but by adding in one odd box that reflects our room’s personality it made the whole project fun for me. I still smile every time I look at that shelf — fun and functional.
So, what fun ways do you have to store your stuff?

5. Ok a while back I started doing my office with purple of and silver. Well Now I want to switch out colors but don’t want to waste all the money invested into purple containers. Would a soft yellow be conclusive to my color scheme and do you think it speaks CREATE? This office is doubled as a very heavy duty craft room where I do everything from cardmaking to edible image creations.
Thanks for your help

6. Hi Julie: Yellow and purple can be quite stunning together — think of purple pansies. It’s a gorgeous look and I do think that color combination definitely says “Create” — have fun with your craft room makeover and send pictures too!
