What’s Halloween without the gross, gory and grotesque? Yes, that applies to food as well. I was asked to bring some “finger food” to a haunting later this month so I thought I’d experiment in the la-bor-a-tory. But, I need your help. Can you  improve on, or give me a few more icky ideas to really gross out my friends (smirk on face and wringing my hands).

(click on pictures if you dare)

This first idea is my sisters and it’s great. ”Blood and Bones”! Easy and yummy as well. Use Pillsbury breadstick dough. On a baking sheet,  tie a knot in both ends of each breadstick. Then brush with butter and sprinkle with garlic salt. Cook as directed and serve with warm marinara sauce (rib-sticking good).

The next is “Body Parts Pu Pu Platter” ( no poo poo, too gross even for me), but brains, fingers and eyeballs are up for grabs. This is easy to do, so here’s the gory details…

A “head” of cauliflower is the brain. Cut a 1/4 inch slice partially down the center of the cauliflower to look like a brain. Rub a little olive oil on it to look slimy.

The eyeballs are white button mushrooms with a hole cut out to insert a  stuffed green olive. Leave the stem on the mushroom for the “optic nerve”.  The egg eyes were hard boiled eggs, cut in half, and a hole cut out to insert 1/2 of a stuffed olive. The red “veins” were drawn on with a toothpick dipped in red food color (these are to die for).

The fingers are baby carrots with a slice cut out for the “nail”,  which is just white cheese cut to shape. The other fingers (really gross) are some Gerber baby food turkey sticks with a slice cut out and sliced almond inserted for the nail. Cut a few slits in the stick where the first knuckle goes for more realism (eeeuuu). You also could use Little Smokies sausages or cocktail dogs for more frightful finger food.

You also could steam the veggies a little to soften, if you don’t like raw. Then derange them all on some good marinara sauce (blood), or you could use salsa, or set them all on a bed of spaghetti tossed in lots of sauce (blood and guts).  You also could tint (green food color), ranch or blue cheese dressing  to dip veggies in. Add a few gummy worms to the dip… for your eating pleasure (more hand wringing).

Well, those are few I’ve experimented with. I’m dying to know any other tantalizing treats you might tempt me with (evil smile).

Have a great Halloween and “Bone” Appetit!

1. Ladies I loved all your pics. but my reason for writing is totally selfish. I am loking for a metal sculpture that I saw in fl. @ the hg in Ft Myers; It is a white, metal peony and it is a wall hanging. U nfortunatly I had already alot of shopping that day and was tired and on myway out of the store when I saw it so i dint get it and now I regret not having gotten it, because when I went back to get it , you guess it it was’nt ther so I am hoping that if anyone happens to find it they wold alert me to it. I wold be most greatful. Sincerely. Lucy

2. Ghost Toast – Make ghosts out of white bread using a cookie cutter. Lightly toast in oven. Spread with a cream cheese and marshmallow cream mixture. Add two raisins for eyes.

Make spiders out of Oreos, black licorice, and raisins.

Wormy Caramel Apples – Cut a small hole half way through each apple. Dip each apple in melted caramel. Inset gummy worm in hole, leaving “head” exposed. The caramel will help seal the hole in the apple and prevent browning.

Worm Dirt – Crush Oreo-type cookies very fine. Cover the bottom of a small clear plastic punch cup with crushed cookies. Fill cups to within 1/2″ of top with chocolate pudding. Cover top with more crushed cookies. Insert gummy worms leaving about 1/2 of worm sticking out. Refrigerate.

Kitty Litter Cake – This is one of our favorites! It is better made the day before the party so all flavors will have time to mingle. Make 2 (13×9) cakes – one chocolate, one white, according to package directions. When cakes are cool, cut cakes into 1″ cubes. Make 2 small boxes of instant vanilla pudding according to package directions. Crush a package vanilla sandwich cookies in a food processor. Remove 1/4 cup of cookies and add green food coloring to it. Sit aside. In a NEW, clean kitty litter pan, mix cake cubes, 1/2 of remaining crushed cookies, and pudding. Sprinkle top with most of remaining crushed cookies. Sprinkle with about 1/2 of green cookies. Unwrap several small tootsie rolls and place on microwave-safe plate. Microwave just until candy is soft and pliable. Roll candy into snakes with pointed ends. Randomly place on top of cake and over the sides of the pan. Sprinkle with remaining green cookies. Serve this cake with a NEW, CLEAN pooper scooper. I promise – your friends will be totally grossed out, but they will LOVE this cake! It is very moist.

3. Great post! I love holiday themed cooking! My simple favorite, however, will always be the popcorn in a plastic glove with spider rings! Classic. Creepy Jello molds are sure to thrill too.

7. Hi there Erin,

Love your ideas. Another thing to do with a disposable latex glove, is to fill the glove up with a red punch add a plastic spider or gummy worms, tie the opening, and freeze the glove. Then cut the glove off the ice hand. And, put it in a bowl of clear or light colored punch.
Yes, there are some great jello molds, I think there’s a brain and some others that are sure to please LOL.

Thanks for adding to delectable dining!!
