I mentioned a few weeks ago that we were making some changes around our home. A trip to Colonial Williamsburg providing our inspiration, we began in our Master Bedroom. If you look over my posts since the beginning of HG Openhouse, you will notice that I like to redecorate our bedroom almost as often as I change my hairstyle.
We are especially excited about the results this time. Beauty and function have become my mantra for decor from this time forward. I am focused on minimizing clutter. We are only keeping things that we absolutely love and/or those that serve a purpose.
The toile curtains and dust ruffle became the backdrop of the new look. Toile fabric is very relaxing with its landscape prints, and is often seen in homes that have been restored to their former 18th century appearance.
I simplified by removing ALL of the extra pillows from the bed. It is sooo much easier to make now! Yippee! We spent last weekend removing all of the clutter off the top of our dressers, and my dh gave the wood a good polishing.
The lantern lamp was an exciting HG find last week and became the finishing touch! We are so pleased with the finished look that we plan on keeping it this way for quite a while. I hope that doesn’t mean I will be keeping my hair this way too!! LOL The only future project may be to paint the walls a rich gold tone to give the room an even warmer feel.
Well, we’re one room down and have several more to go, but getting started is often the hardest part. Which rooms are you redecorating this Fall? Will your look be sleek and modern, victorian lace, country casual, or…?
1. Hi Deb,
I’d like to get your opinion on something. I have a home that was built in the early 90’s. All the built-ins and trim are a golden oak color and my wall paint is “cream in my coffee” by Valspar. I also a have neutral beige carpet in all the rooms except the dining room (oak wood floor) and the wet areas which is a neutral beige tile. What colors for bedding would work in the master bedroom? What color should I use to accessorize with in the kitchen…I have a white tile backsplash and a white tile countertop. I’d appreciate any help you can give me. Oh btw we have dark brown leather furniture in the family room. Thanks:)

2. Hi Karie, Well, I think I would be right at home at your house. Since your basics are neutral, you could go with almost any other colors. I have heard it recommended to start in your closet. By looking at your wardrobe you will see the colors you are particularly drawn to, and probably those that work well with your coloring. After all, we want our home to make us look fabulous too!!
I did a little searching on the Valspar site, and they recommend using Jekyll Club Pulitzer Blue and Lighthouse Shadows as two accent colors. I also liked the Historic Colors – Deep Red, Osgood Green, and Oatlands Shutter Green.
Have some fun playing on the Valspar site. You can pull up your paint color and add accents. You can even save a paint chip sample, print it off, and carry it with you. It’s a very helpful site.
Have fun! I’ll be anxious to hear what you decide.
