One of the most unused, inherited valuables I find in people’s homes is the silver tea set.  Gone are the days (for most of us) when a formal tea is served in our homes. So what to do with this family heirloom?

I’ve come across a few neat ideas for re-purposing your silver tea set so that it can be enjoyed on a daily basis.  Over at Goodhousekeeping I came across this idea of using a small tea set in the bathroom to store make-up and other toiletries.

Another option is to wire your silver tea pot or coffee pot into a lamp (you could do this yourself if you are handy or have a professional wire the lamp for you).

And perhaps my favorite is this idea from Country Living –  using pieces of your tea set to display cut flowers. I think this would be especially stunning with holiday floral, don’t you?  You could use it as a holiday centerpiece on your table.

So, dig out that old silver tea set, polish it up or leave it tarnished for that vintage look  and find a new purpose for it in your home.   And if you’ve repurposed your silver tea set in some other way, please take a moment to share your idea with the rest of us. We’d love to get inspired by you.

1. I LOVE this idea! I have those items and often think it’s such a shame that they’re packed away when they fondly remind me of my grandmother. Sterling silver can swing feminine, traditional or eclectic depending upon where and how you use them. Thanks for the tip.

2. Hi Mary: You are absolutely right that silver can work in just about any decor – it’s all on how you use it. And I think it would be wonderful to put your Gramma’s silver out where you can be reminded of her rather than packed away out of sight. Be sure to stop back and let us know how you repurposed your silver.

4. Lovely ideas, but why not use the silver tea service at least every week for elegant coffee for family? I use it when my friends come for meetings or planned chats…it’s fun to use lovely things!

5. Hi Melissa: Yeah, I wish I’d inherited one too! Thanks Anne for your suggestion as well to use it as intended. I bet your friends love having their coffee served with such elegance. A wonderful way to make them feel extra-special!

6. How about displaying your set on a tray on your coffee table? As a tea drinker I enjoy using mine sometimes with company. I agree with Anne, and Joan, I love using my set… I love love love the teapot lamp, but would never think of turning mine into a lamp… I think I’d do a lamp converison if I found a straggler at a flea market that had no family memories, and now I’m going to be looking! Thanks for the idea!

7. Hi Jackie: Good idea. The goal is to put these pieces to good USE instead of having them stored away in a box. Hope you are able to find one for a lamp — the flea markets are a great place to hunt for them.
