It’s November and that means the countdown to the holidays is on. It seems a little crazy to be talking turkey left-overs before the bird is even in the oven, but this critical tip for organizing your left-overs would come days too late should I not share it in advance.
I’ll be honest that [...]

One of the most unused, inherited valuables I find in people’s homes is the silver tea set. Gone are the days (for most of us) when a formal tea is served in our homes. So what to do with this family heirloom?
I’ve come across a few neat ideas for re-purposing your silver tea set so [...]

I know I’ve been going on and on about storage containers the past few months (call it an occupational hazard or fall nesting syndrome) but I’ve been running across so many great ideas for decorative storage that I have to keep sharing them. The latest is using cups to store small stuff.
Using pretty tea-cups and [...]

I am visiting my family in Ontario, Canada this week to celebrate Canadian Thanksgiving. My sister (the country mouse) put on a lovely turkey dinner (as per usual) with all the fixings. I thought I’d just share the beautiful table she set for our feast. One does have to get creative when it’s a table [...]

In order to keep our homes running smoothly it can’t all be about buying and displaying decorative objects. We need some basic functional pieces as well to help us keep our other stuff in order. At least that’s what I keep telling my clients who are struggling with clutter and chaos.
But you can still have [...]

The number one question I get asked, as a professional organizer, is “what should I buy to better organize my home?” My number one essential for an organized home is shelving.
The most basic type of shelving you can buy is a standard bookcase. But there are all kinds of shelves to consider like the floating [...]

Just in time for the Holidays, HomeGoods has brought in all kinds of great gifts for the pet and pet lover alike. Duke and I went to HomeGoods on Saturday to check it out and I was thrilled with our finds.
The first thing to land in our cart was this darling “Good Dog” towel. We’ll [...]

A few posts back I shared an example of storage as a work of art. This week I’m looking at storage ideas that are created out of re-purposed items. I think this old dollhouse is a classic example of very clever re-purposed storage. Once a child’s toy, it now houses supplies in the laundry room. [...]

A few months ago I wrote a post about my experiences as a part-time paint stripper. Well, after the wood was stripped the hinges and knobs were still covered in layers of paint in the hard-to reach places. I was dreading the fiddly work of trying to clean them up with paint stripper when I [...]

I left my petunias unattended for a few days while I went to my nephew’s wedding. Imagine my shock and dismay when I returned home and discovered that all my lovely bloom was gone. These petunias have been blooming non-stop for 3 months now and I couldn’t imagine how it had so suddenly come to [...]

Kermit the frog’s song, “it ain’t easy being green” echoes in my brain each time I deal with trash that isn’t quite trash, you know the stuff I mean? The stuff that’s not really good enough to donate but still it seems a shame to just throw it out. So, if you are clearing out [...]

Many hotel designers have come up with great ideas for storing towels in the bathroom that you can duplicate at home. Maybe you’ve spotted some on your vacation this year?
Hanging hand towels from a towel rod mounted right below the sink is one of the emerging new trends as seen in this hotel.

Last month I was wandering through HomeGoods and came across the Williams-Sonoma SALAD recipe book on sale for a great price. Salads make such a great summertime meal when it’s just too hot to cook and I’ve been having a lot of fun trying out recipes from this book for the kinds of salads I [...]

With a very rainy spring here in New England and a busy work/travel schedule I’ve been very slow to get our roof deck outfitted for summer but at long last it’s finally ready to enjoy.
Last summer my husband replaced the deck floor and this year I’ve had the fun of furnishing and decorating it. Let [...]

Well, we HG Bloggers have all been having great fun this week taking the Stylescope quiz on the HomeGoods website. Deb and Cathy have already shared their results and I think the quiz described them both to a “t”.
According to the quiz, a well-organized home makes me happy. This picture was one of many [...]

On a recent trip to Paris I ventured outside of the city to visit the cathedral in Chartres. While I was there, I fell in love with this charming little town and couldn’t resist capturing some of the examples I saw of the French-country curb appeal

My husband and I are in the process of renovating a small studio in one of Boston’s historic old buildings.

My Mother’s Garden
My Mother kept a garden,
a garden of the heart,
She planted all the good things
that gave my life it’s start.
She turned me to the sunshine
and encouraged me to dream,
Fostering and nurturing
the seeds of self-esteem.

My husband’s home office has a part-time night job as our guest room. I’ve been talking about the guest room half of the story here and here, but this is what the other half of the room (the home office half) looks like by day. Of course it didn’t always look like this.

Thank-you gifts are tricky. Go too “over the top” and you’ll make the recipient feel uncomfortable. Go too cheap and you’ll appear insincere. Several of my clients like to tear recipes out of magazines or print them off the internet. The problem is that the recipes get lost in piles of paper and can’t be found when needed. So, here is one solution I created for a client to help her “file in style” in the kitchen.

Just heard about the closing of Domino magazine. Gosh, that’s 4 or 5 Decorating Magazines snatched off my magazine rack in the last few months. Word on the street is that folks aren’t decorating in the failing economy. REALLY? SERIOUSLY? I very much doubt that. I mean even our new President [...]

Victorian women took great pride in their linen closets. Piles of sheets, pillowcases and towels as well as table linens would be neatly arranged for display topped off with a sachet bag filled with lavender. I’m not a big fan of housework, but I figure if I’m gonna do it, I may as well take [...]

I do know that decorating blogs this month tend to be about holiday decorating and not actual home re-decorating. I love looking at beautiful rooms in design magazines but I always find myself wondering, “where do they put all their stuff?” You know, papers, toys, craft projects, half-read library books and magazines, video rentals…. How do you organize your books? I tend to organize mine library-style. Grouping the books by non-fiction/fiction, then sub-grouping them according to genre or subject. Sometimes I place them alphabetically after that by author, but usually the final grouping is by size.

Our small space doesn’t afford the luxury of a beautiful guest bedroom so we usually sleep a guest or two on the fold-out futon in the office. At the moment, the room looks much more “office” than “guest room”.
