The studio apartment we’ve been renovating has a large double window which provides all the natural light to the space as well as a view of the neighborhood. When we bought the studio the top woodwork had been covered up by a drop ceiling (see the before) and horizontal metal blinds provided the only window dressing.
The first thing we did was to remove the drop ceiling and expose the beautiful dentil molding that framed the top of the window. We stripped and refinished the woodwork and installed a window A/C unit for the summer months (an absolute necessity) and then we were left with the dilemna of how to dress the windows to provide for privacy, room darkening etc. The bottom of the windows needs to be clear for the A/C in the summer and the windows to be open from the bottom at other times of the year.
I try to get to a HomeGoods every week or two because I’m ALWAYS on the look -out for furnishings I need for people (and because it’s so much fun). On my visit this week, I swung my van into the lot (it knows its way) and saw a few people hauling out some great pieces I hadn’t seen before. So that meant…YES! a new shipment has arrived!!! I grabbed a cart and headed for “possibilities”. I thought you might want to hang out in HomeGoods with me too.
Trendy traditional is chic.
There was a lot of new stuff, but what I noticed more than anything was all the great leather pieces. It was a leather lovers dream. Everything from these chic traditional chairs (hmmm, who needs those besides me) to sleek embossed “snakeskin” leather tables. Very cool. I love putting mirrors to work in my house. Besides adding beauty and style to the walls…when used strategically, they can bring lots of light into a space. Our master bathroom needed the strategic route. With too few light fixtures and a lone window, it can get pretty dark in there. I would love to remodel and improve the fixture situation but until then, a more immediate solution will do the trick. So, I set out to amplify the limited amount of natural light that gets through the window.
Unfortunately, there is only one puny window and it’s made of glass blocks…not exactly an ideal combination! So, I positioned mirrors on the two walls near the window to catch as much sunshine as possible and redistribute it through the rest of the bathroom.
Not surprisingly, I found a pair of fabulous mirrors at HomeGoods. They were about $50 a piece…score!
The mirrors resemble windows and each “pane” contains a beveled mirror. Beveled mirrors are sort of like facets on a diamond…the more there are, the more it light it refracts. They are exactly what I needed!
My efforts produced the results I was looking for and I’m so happy to have found the perfect mirrors for the job. These photos were taken in the evening and the window faces east, so it wasn’t the prime time for natural light. Despite the conditions, it’s a much brighter bathroom than before!

In the small studio apartment we’ve been renovating (less than 400 square feet) every inch counts including the hallway.
After stripping all the woodwork (and re-staining it) and refinishing the floor, and removing the drop ceiling and replastering and repainting the walls (Benjamin moore’s “Everlasting”) and installing new lighting, it was time to add a few finishing touches.
I had a nice lady named Tina write to me on one of my HG posts, “Hang Em High”. This is a post on window treatments, and she was interested in some valance ideas. Tina attached this picture of her windows and wanted ideas on valances specifically, not drapery, to enhance her windows and beautiful view outside. So, I thought I’d take the opportunity to post some quick sketches for her and anyone else interested in some easy top treatments with windows similar to hers.

First, a little background on what Tina requested and her style. She wanted to have a deep valance (length) because she has quite a bit of wall space above her windows (very astute). I agree with her 100%. Most of the top treatment will hang on the walls above the windows with just the top of the window molding covered. This will make the windows look much taller, free up the beautiful view to the outside, and balance the scale of the tall wall. She could hang the top of the treatment up to 24″ above the top of the window and that would give her a nice deep custom designed look. (more…) Read entire post
The inspiration for this post was an email I received from Real Simple featuring an article titled – Clever New Uses for Picture Frames. It caught my attention because I have been considering framing some leftover wallpaper to hang in the bathroom I am redecorating. Of course, I am never satisfied with just one article so I began searching to find additional ideas.
Using the frames themselves as art, like the photo above from Real Simple, was suggested at several sites. You can paint them, leave them rustic, have them match or compliment each other. The possibilities for this idea are as vast as your imagination. Don’t you love it?! Read entire post
One of the first spaces you see when you enter this small studio apartment is the bathroom (the door is immediately to your right as you enter the unit) and my first thought when I saw it was “Eeek!”
I was never a fan of the pink/black tile look even when it was in vogue with it’s co-ordinating pink tub, sink and toilet, but I knew immediately that those tiles would have to go. The bathroom looked stuck in a time warp and did not tie in at all with or vision for a chic studio space.
Hello everyone! My name is Kyle and I’m thrilled to be the newest member of the HG Openhouse Blog team. Through my posts, I’ll share inspiring interiors and will document the various decor projects tackled during my quest to feather my nest. My husband and I moved about a year ago, so we are still in the process of making the new house our home. Little by little, it’s coming together…but to be honest, it will probably never be “finished.” I’m obsessed with interior design and can’t shake the constant desire to refine and perfect my space. While I firmly believe in investing in classic, timeless furniture, accessories (especially lamps, throws, and pillows) are my weakness and I’m always reconfiguring areas to accommodate new baubles. To keep from ending up on the show Hoarders, I try my hardest to edit my evolving wish list and only buy things that I really adore.
Anyhow, I’m thrilled to be a part of this blog because I love shopping at HomeGoods and spreading the word about everything I find there. I’ve come to rely on my local store as a source for everything from non-slip hangers to rugs. So, I’ll also be writing about my HG finds and show how they are put to work in my home.
On that note, I’ll kick things off with a pair of turquoise ceramic lamps purchased at HomeGoods last summer. They now happily reside in my den…you can see them in the photos below. The lamps are a fabulous color and style, and at only $39 a piece, the price was unbeatable.
Also, random factoid…Bethenny has the same lamp in her living room, as seen behind event planner Shawn on Bethenny Getting Married?Pretty cool, huh?
Finally, here’s a peek of my latest HomeGoods buy, a chic glossy white side table. I’ll leave you in suspense and will withhold photos of the whole room. You’ll just have to come back later to see it in action!

..the dining table and chairs, and the window shutters, were some of the requests made by my client.
Whenever I start a decorating project I always ask, “What can we keep?” In fact, I always try to find a few things that we can work with, maybe recover, or refinish, or use in a new way, because your things make your house feel, like home, familiar comforting, and meaningful.
Feature the feature
So we did just that. The challenge was to find the best spot for the grand piano and feature it in the space. We also needed a living room area and dining room. I made a space plan of the the major players in the room and moved the piano all over the space (easier than moving it in person). It finally found a home right between the living room and dining room. But that left little space for a living room seating area. With a few more adjustments I was able to squeeze in a 6′ sofa, 2 slipper chairs, lamp and table for a wonderful sitting area to enjoy. (more…) Read entire post
